Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact us if you have additional questions.

  • How long have you been practicing law?

Matt Ballard has over twenty years of trial experience.  After six years in the Hampton Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, he has zealously representing individuals in the private practice of law since 2010.

  • What types of cases do you handle?

With six years of experience in the Hampton Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, Matt Ballard has focused almost exclusively on the defense of felony and misdemeanor criminal/traffic allegations since 2010. Additionally, we accept select accident/personal injury cases.

  • Is Ballard Law a good fit for my case?

In almost all criminal cases the answer will be yes.  Whether Ballard Law is right for your personal injury case may require a more nuanced analysis.  The best way to find out is to make the call and schedule a free consult.  If we don’t feel like we are the best fit, we will help you find the best lawyer for your needs.

  • Should I talk to insurers without a lawyer?

No, you should always consult an attorney before speaking with an insurance adjuster.  Insurance companies on both sides of a claim will work to limit payouts as much as possible, protecting their own interest and answering to their owners or shareholders first.

  • Should I speak to the police without an attorney?

It’s never a good idea to speak to the police without an attornery if you are suspected of a crime. Often an investigator already has the intent to charge a potential defendant, and their interview is designed to solicit an admission that could actually be devastating to your case. Consult with Ballard Law and let us explain the risks associated with your situation.

  • Do I need a defense attorney if I am innocent?

Yes, while it might be tempting to take unfounded charges less seriously, the reality is that ours is an adversarial system and police officers, detectives, and prosecutors can get it wrong or make mistakes.  If they believe you’ve committed a crime because of false accusations, mistaken identity, a false confession, or bias, an experienced attorney is more important than ever.
